Characteristics

  • Orthostatic Hypotension is more common in elderly people and is attributed to an age related decrease in physiological function (reduction in baroreceptor sensitivity) and polypharmacy (including various vasoactive drugs).
  • It is defined as a drop in blood pressure on assuming an upright posture and is due to failure ofthe autonomic system to compensate for venous pooling in the lower extremities, which results in reduced venous return, decreased cardiac output, and cerebral hypoperfusion.

Medications that Exacerbate

  • TCA
  • Ethanol
  • ACE inhibitors
  • Alpha Blockers
  • CCB
  • Phenothiazines
  • Opiates
  • Bromocriptine
  • Beta Blockers
  • Sidenafil citrate

Treatment

  • Avoid predisposing conditions or medications
  • Make sure they have adequate fluid and salt intake
  • Exercise and Resistance Training
  • Support Hose
