Electrical Noise Artifact

Introduction

There are multiple causes of internal and external noise artifact leading to inappropriate therapy on a ICD. When external EMI is the cause of electrical noise artifacts signals are usually recorded in both the atrial and ventricular (sensing and high voltage) channels. Examples of Internal and External noise are listed below.

Internal Noise

1. Fractured Conductor --also referred to as lead fracture but follow links to conductor fracture
2. Insulation Failure
3. Fluid in Connector Ports
4. Myopotentials
5. Diaphragmatic Myopotentials
6. Myopotentials due to Reversal of High Voltage Pins in the Header using a Integrated Bipolar Lead

External Noise

1. Cautery
2. TENS
3. Electric Razors
4. Remote Controls
5. Slot Machines
6. Washing Machines
7. Anti theft devices
